Ashtanga Yoga Morjim is dedicated to the traditional Mysore-style Ashtanga Yoga system. The shala is nestled under coconut palm trees on the Bhakti Sanctuary - a small effort committed to the protection of animals, with a focus on abandoned cows and water buffalos. It sits on ancestral land of five generations in Goa, India and is an homage to a simple life.
We welcome practitioners of all stages of life and practice including families, families to be, young, elderly, beginners, those further along. Our aspiration is to cultivate the space and surrounding garden as a self disciplined, wholistic and nurturing home for contemplation.
Mysore-style classes are taught by Sharmila Desai - a mother, gardener, writer and long time Ashtanga practitioner. Having been introduced to yoga as a way of life from her grandmother, she was later taught the transformative discipline of Ashtanga yoga by K Pattabhi Jois, R Sharath Jois and R Saraswati Jois in Mysore. Her teachings come from daily devotion over many years. Sharmila received Certification from the Institute to teach after her two children were born. She continues to study the traditional sciences in Mysore, Tamil Nadu and the Himalaya.
